CES Partner Spotlight: Craig Tanner thinks 3D is a Digital Revolution

Leading up to CES, we’re turning the spotlight on our partners to get their perspective on what’s happening in digital 3D. Today, we’re pleased to chat with Craig Tanner of Digital Revolution Studios.

What does Digital Revolution Studios do in your own words?

Digital Revolution Studios produces all types of high quality 3D films.  From concept to deliverables, DRS can provide the service for any production.  We are world leaders in high quality 3D productions, and pride ourselves on being ahead of the curve.  DRS has a top-notch post-production team that works all aspects of post, from 2D & 3D editing, to color, to VFX, to deliverables.

Tell us your role in moving forward 3D as a platform?  How does Digital Revolution Studios stand out from other stereoscopic 3D production studios?

DRS truly believes in the future of the 3D space. Quality 3D is not as hard to find as it was back when there was only a handful of us companies out there doing it – only 3 years ago.  With Asia, Europe and North America networks and tech providers backing 3D, we are seeing a large increase in demand for our content.  The more high quality 3D content we, as a company – and as an industry – are able to provide the suppliers – and thus the consumers – the more advertisers will jump on board.  As a company, DRS in convinced that Mobile Devices will be a game changer, not only because the need for glasses is eliminated, but because it is a more natural way to view content.  We are very excited about the future, and feel that we will be part of the world movement of streaming content.

Tell us about one of the most interesting 3D projects you guys worked on?

There’s been so many.  Most recently, however, we did our first music video (Foster The People – Don’t Stop!) for Sony Music and Nintendo, and in conjunction with Pretty Bird Productions.  The Directors (“The Daniels”) were extremely talented and the band was so much fun too!  This was a lot of fun for me personally, as I had never worked on a music video before.  It was a really quick shoot, had many challenges to overcome, and a fast post production turn around.   The end product has been a hit, and at the end of the day I had a lot of fun.

We are also in post on a feature length project that I am really proud to be a part of.  HUMOR & HEARTACHE OF WAR is a feature length documentary film honoring the men and women who served as airmen during WWII.  This film has a unique approach of highlighting the conflict, patriotism, and the victory of this war.  The driving force of this story are the pilots, bombardiers, and gunners who participated during the war, and their personal experiences that are not found in history books.  This film takes an in-depth look into aviation’s humble beginnings, and how the United States won the war due to air-power supremacy.  As a retired Air Force Officer, I am extremely proud of this project and hope to motivate the younger generation to get more involved in the aviation community.

What is different about making 3D content for the mobile platform versus other bigger screen platforms?

For me personally, I don’t see a huge difference.  Regardless of screen size, content is content, and we always strive to provide programming that people WANT to see and enjoy.  There are a few things to take into consideration when filming – as you want to make sure you meet your client’s goals of how much negative and positive parallax they want. With the mobile platform rolling out, more and more people will be able to see it in 3D.

What is the best individual piece of 3D content that you have seen on any platform?

I am still in awe of AVATAR.  I spent 3 years of my life on one film, and I still have so much respect for all the hard work, and dedication it took to make this movie come together.  James Cameron and the talented group he chose to make this film with him are truly 3D heroes!

What’s your favorite media/content/technology blog, Twitter feed or mobile app?

As a pilot, I love the advancements in the aviation community.  The GPS and flying tools that can be placed on phones and tablets are so cool.  My favorite tools are the ones that make my life easier and more efficient.

What makes you most excited about what is happening in 3D over the next few years?

The balance of supply and demand is really exciting.  Worldwide, we are seeing the trend toward more 3D incorporated into the home.   Technology and human resources are improving daily.  This allows us as content providers to have greater choices of camera operators, better cameras and rigs and better post hardware and software.  But, streaming content, especially 3D content, is the thing I look forward to the most.  The new devices and screens coming out will enable so many more people to view 3D content.  We’ve had the opportunity to create some content that is being shown on the MasterImage technology – and WOW!  Is all I can say!

What is an exciting new project you are working on?

We have so many exciting things slated for 2012, but I guess I am looking forward to a new feature that we currently have in development titled “Dirt Rangers”, it is an action adventure film, think of Indiana Jones meets The Goonies.  It will be a lot of fun, and will appeal to the adventurer – young and old.

What Digital Revolution Studios is doing with MasterImage 3D:  Not only are they providing 3D content to our embedded 3D mobile portal, but they also have created some custom 3D shorts that show ground-breaking negative parallax 3D.
