CES Partner Spotlight: National Geographic brings digital 3D to life

Leading up to CES, we’re turning the spotlight on our partners to get their perspective on what’s happening in digital 3D. Today, we’re pleased to chat with Lisa Truitt, President at National Geographic Cinema Ventures.

What makes National Geographic a great company?

To me, National Geographic is a company like no other. At our core, we are a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire people to care about the planet. We send the world’s best explorers and scientists, including the most promising up-and-comers, to all corners of the globe, and we then share their discoveries and passions with the world through the power of great storytelling. Our profits go right back to fund more exploration, research, conservation and science work, and that makes it a very inspiring place to work.

National Geographic is also such a well-respected and loved brand, with a targeted, loyal audience, and a global reach of more than 400 million people around the world each month. We have vast media and outreach assets, including TV, digital, social media, print, gaming, mobile, publishing, licensing, education products, travel excursions, live events, and more. Over time, National Geographic continues to reinvent itself on new platforms, and has been at the forefront of embracing new technology to continue to engage consumers with our powerful storytelling. I feel so lucky to be a part of this organization, to spend my life creating entertainment that matters.  Continue reading

“4 Reasons 3D Movies Aren’t Just a Fad” [Mashable]

Our very own EVP & GM of 3D Display, Roy Taylor, had this to say today in Mashable: “There’s a lot of discussion these days about the viability of 3D and what the future holds for it. Is it a gimmick? A trend? Or is it the next great frontier in movie making?

As someone in the business of 3D, I’d like to share some thoughts on why I think it’s here to stay, and in a big way.”

Make it 3D

What better way to get the next generation of filmmakers excited about shooting in 3D? The International 3D Society is launching an ad campaign this week to celebrate the impressive line of directors who are now embracing digital 3D as a medium. Martin Scorsese, who just released ‘Hugo’ last week (which 75% of people are seeing in 3D), is the first to be featured. Upcoming ads will focus on such luminaries as James Cameron, Peter Jackson, and others. Continue reading

3D in the hands of the auteurs

3D has come a long way since Comin’ at Ya. You may not have realized it, but the next 6 months will see digital 3D movies directed by such Hollywood luminaries as James Cameron (Titanic), George Lucas (Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace), Martin Scorsese (Hugo), and Steven Spielberg (The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn).

It will be interesting to see how each of these accomplished directors uses digital 3D to enhance their storytelling. In many ways, 2012 looks like it will fully deliver on the promise digital 3D has made to audiences since its inception: namely, how it can make cinema more immersive, more wondrous, more lifelike.

We couldn’t be more excited to see these movies and we expect big things from 3D cinema in 2012. Here’s a closer look at these films…

Memories from ShowEast 2011

Hollywood, Florida? Absolutely! I was here from Hollywood west coast to attend the 2011 ShowEast Trade Show. What’s that? You missed your flight? Don’t worry, just read on… oh, if you were there, you should read on too…

MasterImage 3D was in Hollywood, Florida at ShowEast. With digital conversion, new builds, and tight budgets all weighing heavily on the minds of Exhibitors, the MasterImage solutions for 3D equipment and financing received a very warm welcome. I met with many Integrators and Exhibitors that were excited to see the new MasterImage 3D system and the variety of installation choices now available. They were equally happy to discover the new pricing and financing options available. Continue reading
